The Stonewall Jackson Raiders varsity football team trailed the Langley Saxons for most of the game; however, with 8:05 remaining in the 4th quarter, the Raiders took their first lead of the game, 43-42. The lead held until 3:29 when the Saxons scored a touchdown but failed to convert a two-point conversion. It took less than a minute (@ 2:35) for the Raiders to respond with a touchdown and successful two-point conversion to make the score 51-48. Given both teams had been moving the ball without problem all night, a Raiders' victory wasn't assured. Sure enough, the Saxons were able to move the ball into field goal range with less than 20 seconds left in the game. The Raiders secured their victory when the field goal went just left of the upright. (Photo galleries: DMVpix or MaxPreps)

Yorktown Advances with 1st Round Playoff Victory over Fairfax (15 Nov 2013)
The Yorktown Patriots varsity football team needed a blocked field goal and solid running between the tackles in their final drive to win their Region 6A North first-round playoff game against the visiting Fairfax Rebels by a score of 12-7. Both teams missed scoring opportunities during the game with Yorktown fumbling inside the 5-yd line in the first half, missing a field goal and having an extra point blocked. Fairfax had three turnovers (one a pick-6 near the end of the 3rd quarter for the game's first score) and a missed field goal (in addition to the block). Despite these miscues, both teams played well making for an exciting game that could have easily gone either way. In fact, the game seemed to swing in the Rebels' direction when a pass was fumbled, picked up in stride by a teammate and taken into the end zone for the Rebels' first touchdown. On their next possession the Rebels believed they had returned a punt for a touchdown, but it was negated due to a penalty. The drive instead ended in the blocked field goal, followed by Yorktown driving the ball down the field for the win. (Photo galleries: DMVpix or MaxPreps)

Incomplete Hail Mary Ends Gonzaga's Comeback Hope Against St. John's (10 Nov 2013)
The St. John's College Cadets beat the Gonzaga College Eagles in a varsity football WCAC semifinal game at University of Maryland's Byrd Stadium on Sunday. The Eagles, who let a 2nd quarter 10-0 lead slip through their hands, had an opportunity to tie the game as the clock expired. A Hail Mary into the end zone came to rest on the chest of Eagles' #84, Luke Prominski, who was on his back on the ground. For a few seconds, the Eagles thought they had a touchdown; however, their celebration was short lived as the pass was ruled incomplete. Fortunately, the referees made the correct call as the ball hit the ground before finding its way to Luke. The final score was Cadets 17, Eagles 10.
