The Yorktown Patriots varsity football team needed a blocked field goal and solid running between the tackles in their final drive to win their Region 6A North first-round playoff game against the visiting Fairfax Rebels by a score of 12-7. Both teams missed scoring opportunities during the game with Yorktown fumbling inside the 5-yd line in the first half, missing a field goal and having an extra point blocked. Fairfax had three turnovers (one a pick-6 near the end of the 3rd quarter for the game's first score) and a missed field goal (in addition to the block). Despite these miscues, both teams played well making for an exciting game that could have easily gone either way. In fact, the game seemed to swing in the Rebels' direction when a pass was fumbled, picked up in stride by a teammate and taken into the end zone for the Rebels' first touchdown. On their next possession the Rebels believed they had returned a punt for a touchdown, but it was negated due to a penalty. The drive instead ended in the blocked field goal, followed by Yorktown driving the ball down the field for the win. (Photo galleries: DMVpix or MaxPreps)
